A Study on Diabetic Diet Therapy for Korean Diabetes


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present a more adequate and practical diabetic diet meal plan suitable for Korean food habits, and provide a basic for the future planning of desirable diet.
For the purpose of this study, a questionaire was given to 53 outpatients and inpatients and a nutritional and clinical study on 15 inpatients was carried out from April 10 to June 20, 1978.
1. The results of the questionaire are as follows.
(1) The peak incidence was found among patients in the fifties (39.6% of total). Among these male patients out numbered female 60.4% to 39.6%.
(2) The overall distribution of physical condition showed normal weight 57.2%, over weight 21.8%, obesity 14.1%.
(3) Among the surveyed patients 13.9% had family history of diabetic disease.
(4) Distribution according to occupation showed managerial position held the first place among men and housewife was most common among women.
(5) Cigarrette smoking and drinking liquor and coffee decreased in men after onset of disease. Women took saccharine more than men.
(6) The survey also showed that 72.8% took additional nourishing foods or vitamins apart from regular meal.
(7) 50.8% of the patients received dietary advice from physician, 29.9% from dietitian, 12.3% from both dietitian and physician.
2. Nutritional study on hospitalized patients
(1) The diets for diabetic patients in hospital can be divided into 5 categories, such as normal diabetic diet, soft diabetic diet, high protein diabetic diet, low sodium diabetic diet and low sodium soft diabetic diet, and the average intake ratio is 90.90%.
(2) Many kinds of supplemental food are used and are eaten irregularly.
(3) Daily average calorie, carbohydrate, protein and fat intake and their distribution are as- follows:
1) Total calorie intake shows 1700-1799 Cal., carbohydrate 240-259.9 g, protein 80 89.9g and fat 40-49.9g.
2) Distribution of calorie is shown to be 50-60% carbohydrate, 19-2100 protein and 23-2500 fat.
3. Clinical study on hospitalized patients
(1) Fasting blood sugar level of initial and fianl day shows 200-249mg%, and 100-149 mg%, respectively.
(2) Urinarysis for glucose of initial and final day are changed from 95% positive to 20% positive, in fasting.
(3) The case which were treated by diet alone composed 37%, diet insulin 2400, diet+ oral drugs 33.4 and diet+Oral drugs+insulin 5.2%.
4. Effects of treatment which are judged according to blood sugar level shows good 35%, fair 55% and primary failure 10%.
5. In consideration of the effects of treatment for diabetes and Korean food habits, desirable distribution of calorie would be carbohydrate 55%, protein 2000, and fat 25%.
